Scale of operation
Altri main focus is the production of bleached eucalyptus pulp, being one of the lowest cost producers in Europe.
Altri’s three pulp mills – Celbi, Caima and Celtejo – produce over 500,000 tones per year. The company has a ongoing project to double the capacity of Celbi in 2010 to 300,000 tones per year to 600,000 tones per year. The total capacity of the 3 pulp mills in 2010 will be around 900,000 tones per year.
Currently Altri manages around 80,000 ha of forest in Portugal all certified by the Forest Stweardship Council (FSC) one of the main references in this industry. The wood self sufficiency rate stands around 50%.
To optimise forest management Altri acquired a 50% stake in EDP Bioelectrica (a joint venture in equal shares with EDP) to develop a single renewable source of energy: biomass. This company has 120 MWh under concession of which 22 MWh is already in operation. By 2009 two new biomass power plants will be inaugurated (Figueira da Foz and Constância) totaling more than 43MWh.
Apart from the biomass the company also has a strong focus on cogeneration. The pulp mills operated by Altri are entirely self sufficient on power that is produced through the burning of wood components not suitable for pulp production - the black liqour.
In June 2008 it was made the spin-off of FRamada, a special steel retailer that was part of Altri since its incorporation in 2005. By the end of 2008 a small kraft sack paper mill (CPK) was closed. The strategic rationale of these operations was to focus Altri as a pure eucalyptus market pulp player.
Altri’s rapid growth has been fuelled by successful acquisitions (Celtejo in 2005 and Celbi in 2006) in line with the company’s focus on shareholder return.
Our strategy is to capture the maximum value from our main asset – the forest – and to continue growing the pulp business, adding new capacity through new value accretive acquisitions or through organic growth projects.
